About the Recreation Department

The Marion Recreation Department was created by voter referendum in April 1947 as a part of the city government. It came about after local citizens realized the advantages and opportunities offered by a city recreational program. The Recreation Department has continued to evolve over the years, but its basic purpose remains the same: to give young people the opportunity to participate in organized recreational activities in a safe, supervised environment.

Today, the Department offers a variety of programs throughout the year enabling students to learn and improve skills as well as enjoy healthy competition. These programs include:

  • Marion Marlins Swim Team - Summer - ages 5 - 18
  • Tennis Program - Summer - ages 9 - 18
  • Marion Swamp Fox Track Club - Summer - ages 6 - 18
  • Tackle Football Program - Fall - grades 5th - 8th
  • MBA Basketball - Winter - grades 3rd - 7th

The Recreation Department also oversees the operation of the Marion Youth Center. The Center is open on weekends throughout the year for junior and senior high school students in the Marion school district. It offers music, dances, games, snacks, and a place to hang out and have fun.
